'The land and the Memory' Museum

What to see in Pigna, Imperia, Liguria

The museum, opened in 1995, located in the premises "sottopiazza" of the medieval village of Pigna, accompanies the visitor to the contact with the memory of the rural civilization of the Alta Val Nervia and invites him to become aware of the wealth of knowledge and practices which it developed. In five exhibition halls are collected objects, tools, documents and photographs related to pastoral activity, farmers and craftsmen, together with the memory of the traditions linked to the devotional aspects and popular leisure, by religious processions to the feasts that a time gave rhythm to social life. "The Earth and Memory" intends to focus attention on the indissoluble bond that unites every artifact with each activity connected thereto through the testimonies of history, survived on the ancient parchments municipal or registered by modern means of audiovisual communication. To facilitate this journey into the past the museum boasts of teaching aids and factsheets, where each piece is qualified by its technical name in Italian, Pignasco and French. Among the objectives is that of strengthening the integration between the museum and its territory, already today the object of thematic routes such as those dedicated to the Piedmontese Giovanni Canavesio in the vast frescoes in the church of San Bernardo (Passion and final judgment, 1482) and in the great Polyptych of San Michele of Parish Church (1500) and interesting exhibitions "water tells" and "Artisan".
